The United States Congress has taken a decisive step to secure the future of the Voice of America (VOA) by approving funding for its parent company, the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM).
This decision marks a crucial turning point for U.S. public diplomacy. Congress has agreed to allocate $653 million to fund the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM), the entity that oversees the Voice of America (VOA).
This bipartisan agreement effectively reverses the shutdown order issued by the Trump administration, which had sought to dismantle the organization. The amount approved by lawmakers is more than four times the amount requested for the "orderly closure" of operations.
The agency's deputy director, Kari Lake, expressed her disappointment with Congress's commitment, which guarantees the station's continued operation after a year of administrative paralysis and the first time it has been off the air since 1942. The VOA's restart is expected to be complex due to the structural and human damage caused during its suspension.
