RFI broadcasts 24 hours per day around the world in French and in 12 other languages in FM, shortwave, medium wave, satellite and on its website. It is a channel of the state company France Médias Monde. The majority of shortwave transmissions are in French and Hausa but also includes some hours of SwahiliPortugueseMandinka, and Russian. RFI broadcasts to over 150 countries on 5 continents.[2] Africa is the largest part of radio listeners, representing 60% of the total audience in 2010.[3] In the Paris region, RFI comprises between 150,000 and 200,000 listeners.

In 2007, the audience was of 46.1 million listeners, breaking down into 27.5 million in Africa, 10.5 million in the Middle East, 4.2 million in the Americas, 2.2 million in Europe and 1.7 million in Asia-Oceania.[4]

In 2022, out of 112 countries and territories, 321 million speakers of which 255 million use it daily, (Statistics by country – extract LFDM-2022).

For four years, 21 million additional people speak French, an increase of 7% since 2018.

5th world language (after English, Chinese, Hindi and Spanish).

A language spoken on all continents.

French is spoken by more than 50% of the population in 13 countries and between 20 and 50% in 20 countries.

According to the International Organization of La Francophonie, "the number of French speakers has grown by at least 10% and at a faster rate than the population as a whole, the following cases are noted: Benin, Burundi, Burkina Faso, Cameroon , Congo, Ivory Coast, Guinea, Equatorial Guinea, Mali, Niger, Democratic Republic of Congo, Senegal, Chad and Togo".


The OIF adds: "Niger and the DRC show the best growth rates compared to those of the whole (respectively +18% and +15%). And for several, the increases are much stronger than between 2014 and 2018 (between +7 points and +13 points), while, for others, the progression is significantly less strong than between 2014 and 2018 (between -5 and -16 points)".
