The station has an AM and FM radio network that has storefronts and officially licensed or leased time slots on legal transmitters in cities across North America.

This activity is the tip of the iceberg. “Sound of Hope” is the radio arm of Falun Gong, a sect in San Francisco that wants to conquer communist China through clandestine shortwave transmitters.

Marketing professionals

Everything is being done so that "Sound of Hope" becomes a Chinese-language radio station allowing the Chinese-speaking public to express their own voice... That of the listeners or of Falun Gong?

An American, religious and anti-communist organization! They have everything to displease Beijing and benefit from the good graces of the USA and Taiwan.

A major tenant of Radio Taiwan International.

In its early days, "Sound of Hope" used RTI's transmitter center in Huwei: Facilities that had been built in the 1970s, under the direction of the Ministry of Defense which then owned CBS and with the help and funding of the American army. Aid granted as part of a strategy to provide the Chinese with information uncensored by the Communist Party.

The transmitters and antennas, directed towards mainland China, were used under a rental contract for 4 to 5 hours a day on a multitude of frequencies to escape jamming.

Voice of America and Radio Free Asia did the same.

"Sound of Hope" and hiding.

Radio Taiwan International's equipment was aging and RTI needed to cut costs. This cost reduction involved a reorganization of its fleet of transmitters.

In May 2013, Sound of Hope learned that the transmitter centers in Tannai and Huwei will be closed and the antennas will be destroyed.

SOH suspects the sudden decision could portend political pressure from mainland China.

On the side of the authorities in Huwei, the dismantling of the historic site is justified by the imminent creation of a new station for the TGV whose line already runs along the site.

On the side of RTI have announced that the transmitter of Danshui sees its capacities increased in compensation.

The diplomatic battles and pressure on Taiwan by the US, where Falungung has strong political support, went unheeded. Especially since RTI is an independent association.

A resort in nature.

In the absence of an agreement with RTI, Sound of Hope stated that "without RTI, the airwaves will still go to China via our own equipment"

Since that date, Sound of Hope has officially gone underground and no longer reveals its location(s).

One thing is certain, the transmitters are numerous, but of low power. They can be dispersed in several places since the reception of the signal can be achieved by the satellite link.

The transmission power is very low, the transmitters are as big as an amateur radio station. Some speak of a 100 watt transmitter, a big banana box. The antenna cannot be located

The broadcasts are regularly jammed by transmitters from the People's Republic of China. The jamming commonly used, is a continuous crash and detonation noise, also known as "Firedragon" or "Firedrake". It is also traditional or folk Chinese music that is looped and played continuously during the broadcast.

Sound of Hope varies its frequency slightly to reduce its effects.

Sound of Hope (SOH) is an international Chinese-language radio network. Along with New Tang Dynasty Television and The Epoch Times, it is part of a network of media organizations established by practitioners of the Falun Gong new religious movement.[1][2] SOH serves the Chinese diaspora in US, Europe, Australia, Japan and South Korea via AM/FM radio and Chinese people in China via shortwave radio.[citation needed]

Stations and programs[edit]

SOH Network radio programs are primarily in Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese).

SOH is headquartered in San Francisco, California, and has two main operations. One serves Chinese Americans in the U.S. via AM/FM and the other serves China via shortwave radio. Each operation produces its own content for its audience.[citation needed]

The US radio started from KSQQ FM 96.1, KVTO AM 1400 during afternoon and evening hours and has grown to be the largest Chinese radio in the region,[citation needed] adding KQEA-LP/KQEB-LP (96.9 FM, two time-shared licenses) as affiliated stations. It provides news and lifestyle talkshows relating to local expatriate Chinese, and covers issues such as elections, local policy debates, California droughts, Cupertino city redevelopment, and the COVID-19 pandemic.[3][non-primary source needed]

The US radio also provides network programming to 14 affiliated Chinese-language FM radios.[citation needed]

The China radio broadcasts to mainland China through more than 100 shortwave stations. Programs of SOH can also be listened to via online streaming and mobile apps.[4][5][non-primary source needed]

SOH also produces YouTube video programs. The YouTube channel 江峰时刻 had more than half a million subscribers as of 2020.[6][non-primary source needed] SOH teamed with Epoch Times editor John Nania to start the right-wing news website America Daily at americadaily.com.[2]

Sound of Hope has launched iPhone and Android apps for users to listen to programs.[7]

Relationship to Falun Gong[edit]

The Sound of Hope radio network was co-founded by Sean Lin and Allen Zeng.[8] The network united local radio stations that had been founded by Falun Gong practitioners. It is one of a number of media outlets, such as The Epoch Times and NTDTV, started by Falun Gong practitioners who emigrated to the West.[1]

Most of its initial staff were Falun Gong adherents who volunteered their time and services. It was the last of the three media to be established,[citation needed] beginning operations in June 2003, supported by a network of volunteers that continue to maintain the station's programming. In 2005, the San Francisco Chronicle reported that the boards, including Allen Zeng and its reporting staffs of 20, were composed of Falun Gong practitioners.[9]
